Disposal Instructions for liquids, needles and sharps

Liquids

Picture
Mix liquid medication with kitty litter or coffee grounds. Place mixture in a sealed plastic bag and place in trash. Liquids cannot be collected in the Rx drop boxes.

NEVER flush medications
 down the toilet!

Medicines flushed down the toilet are ending up in our drinking water. Water treatment facilities are not designed to remove medications. Medications are also affecting fish and other aquatic life after treatment facilities return the water to the streams and rivers.  DON'T throw medications in the trash! Medications can lead into the groundwater from lined landfills.

Needles and Sharps

Picture
If you do not have an FDA-approved container, place needles and sharps in an empty #2 HDPE bottle such as a laundry detergent bottle. Label bottle "Do Not Recycle" and store in safe location, out of reach of children and pets. When bottle is full, secure lid with heavy tape and dispose in trash. Needles and sharps cannot be collected at Rx drop boxes.

Windham Solid Waste Management accepts sharp containers as explained above. Some ambulance services also accept sharps and needles.
